Movement as a social change strategy:

Transformation from within:
Shifting our inner world (thoughts, feelings, etc) to create change in the external world
Dance as a healing tool:
Supporting health, wellness and personal growth on all levels
Full creative expression of all:
Providing an environment that encourages all to unleash their creative potential and share their healing gifts.
Inherent value in all:
Appreciating that everyone has something important to contribute.
E. Sophia Kozak is the founding director of Critical Mass Dance Company and creator of Dance from the Heart. Sophia seeks to bridge worlds of social activism, healing arts, and dance to create healing spaces for people and the planet. Her 10-year career as a dancer, community organizer, and healing arts practitioner, and her mixed cultural heritage of Cuban and Czech descent inspires CMDC's
creative vision. The Czech art form of blacklight theater informs CMDC's signature 'blacklight dance theater' style, which combines blacklight theater with dance, flow arts, circus and aerial arts. CMDC has presented work at Los Angeles venues including Diavolo, Bootleg Theater, Greenway Theater, La Macha Theater, Ivy Substation, Miles Playhouse, and others.
Sophia developed CMDC's cornerstone healing movement method, Dance from the Heart. She has been teaching since 2010 and published a book on the practice in 2017. Sophia has received grants from the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the City of West Hollywood, Culver City, Open Meadows, and others for CMDC's work. She holds a B.A. from UCLA and M.A. degrees in Spiritual Psychology (Counseling) and Nonprofit Management. When not dancing, Sophia works as a career counselor at Career Transition For Dancers/The Actors Fund, helping other dancers to reach their dreams.
